Concert for Remembrance

Ron Wasserman, principal bassist of New York City Ballet has composed a violin concerto for Alison in memory of her son and the healing power of music. The world premiere of Lament and Restoration was given on May 30, 2004 in Sant'Oreste, Italy during the town's 200 year old Holy Mary of May Festival. In Sant'Oreste, the town's new young people's cultural and recreational center was dedicated to Welles. His story has travelled and inspired around the world.

The U.S. premier of the concerto was given at this year's Concert for Remembrance, which is held each year on the first Sunday after September 11th.

The public is cordially invited to the concert and there is no charge for admission. The Concert is sponsored by The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, GraceMusic, Grace Episcopal Church and the musicians who generously donate their time and talent.

A CD recording of the concerto, "Lament and Restoration" and Wasserman's "Suite of Historical Dances" was recorded, produced, and released September 12, 2004. Andrea Quinn, musical director of New York City Ballet, conducted professional musicians from all of the major New York Metropolitan orchestras for this recording. A country western song, "One Red Bandanna" has been written about Welles by Stive Lenick, a Nashville recording artist. This song will be released nationally the fall of 2004. Mr. Lenick will donate all proceeds from the sale of "One Red Bandanna" to the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust.

2006

Concert for Remembrance

Dedication
Just prior to concert, at 4:30 pm, the Rev. Richard Gressle will conduct a dedication ceremony of a paschal candle sculpture for the church, created from a section of steel beam from the World Trade Center. The sculpture, entitled "Phoenix Rising," was created by Eznic Karakashian and is inscribed with the following words: "As the Phoenix, so Good shall rise from the Ashes to Triumph over Evil and Prevail on our Path toward the Pure Light of God." The sculpture was commissioned by the Crowther family in memory of their late son, Welles. 9/11 Family members and the general public are invited to attend the dedication.

Concert Details
Professional musicians from the New York Philharmonic, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, New Jersey Symphony, Long Island Philharmonic, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Rockland Symphony and Westchester Philharmonic volunteer their time and talents for this concert. Edward Simons, conductor of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, is music director and conductor of the GraceMusic Chamber Orchestra.

Désirée Elsévier, violist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, will open the concert, performing G.F. Handel’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra in B minor, arranged by Henri Casadesus.

Barbara Allen, principal harpist with American Ballet Theatre Orchestra, and Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist with the New York Philharmonic, will perform "O Mio Babbino Caro," composed by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) and arranged by Robert Elkjer. Ms. Allen and Mr. Alessi have recorded this piece for a CD which will be released in 2007.

The world premiere of Trilaterus, a three movement trio for violin, double bass and piano composed by Ron Wasserman, principal bassist of the New York City Ballet, will be performed by Shirien Taylor, violin; Lenore Fishman Davis, piano and Mr. Wasserman, double bass. Ms. Davis has been a guest soloist with The New Jersey Philharmonic and has enjoy an illustrious career as a performing artist with ArborMusic.

Violinists Avi Landy Nagin, student of Ann Setzer at the Preparatory Division of Mannes College of Music in NYC and at Meadowmount; Shelby Yamin, student of Grigory Kalinovsky at Manhattan School of Music and Tanglewood’s Young Artist Orchestra and Alison Crowther, mother of Welles and member of the Rockland Symphony and Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, will perform Sonata No. 1 for two violins composed by Jean-Marie LeClair (1697-1764), arranged by Edward Simons for three violins.

Patrick Milando, French hornist who is a frequent guest artist with the New York Philharmonic, will appear as soloist in W.A. Mozart’s Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major for Horn and Orchestra, concluding the program.

Paul Chihara, world renowned composer, has composed a new work for harp and flute, entitled "Flights of Angels," especially for Barbara Allen and her daughter, Holly Druckman, a student of Laura Gilbert’s at the Mannes Preparatory College of Music, to perform for the dedication. They will give the world premiere at the dedication of "Phoenix Rising."

Mr. Chihara’s prize-winning concert works have been performed in most major cities and arts centers in the U.S. and Europe. His numerous commissions and awards include those from The Lili Boulanger Memorial Award, the Naumberg Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fulbright Fellowship, the Aaron Copland Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Juilliard Ensemble and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Chihara was composer-in-residence for the San Francisco Ballet from 1973-1986. His works have been widely recorded and he has composed scores for over 90 motion pictures and television series. Mr. Chihara is Professor of Music at UCLA.

6th Annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11

The sixth annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11 will be held on Sunday, September 16, 5 pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Avenue, Nyack, NY. Sponsored by the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, the concert is given in memory of all of the victims and heroes of the attacks against our country on September 11, 2001. There is no charge for admission and the public is warmly invited.

Professional musicians from American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, New Jersey Symphony, Hawthorne Symphony, Albany Symphony, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Long Island Philharmonic, Rockland Symphony, Stamford Symphony, Westchester Philharmonic, Manhattan School of Music and Mannes Preparatory College of Music volunteer their time for this concert. Edward Simons, conductor of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, is music director and conductor of the GraceMusic Chamber Orchestra.

The concert will open with the orchestra performing Bela Bartok’s Rumanian Dances, featuring Heather Haskew Vogel, violinist and concertmistress. The piece is evocative of the international vitality of the World Trade Center before the September 11th attacks.

Barbara Randall, violinist with American Ballet Theatre, New York City Opera and the Long Island Philharmonic, will perform as soloist in Ralph Vaughn Williams’s The Lark Ascending.

Barbara Allen, principal harpist of the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra will perform her own transcription of Cordoba from Cantos de Espagna by Issac Albeniz. Ms. Allen has recently produced a CD with Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic.

Jay Shulman, cellist, and Christopher Oldfather, pianist, will perform Tanzlied des Pierrot by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Mr. Shulman, son of the late cellist and composer, Alan Shulman, is a member of the Long Island Philharmonic. He teaches and performs throughout the Hudson Valley and recently produced CD re-issues of the Stuyvesant String Quartet and Alan Shulman’s music.

Christopher Oldfather presented his recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall. He has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and internationally, as well as with the Juilliard String Quartet. His recording of Elliott Carter’s Violin-Piano Duo with Robert Mann was nominated for two Grammy Awards.

Holly Druckman, flute and student of Laura Gilbert at Mannes Preparatory College of Music, and Christopher Oldfather will perform the first two movements of Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata for Flute and Piano in D major, Moderato and Scherzo.

Alison Crowther, mother of Welles, violinist, will perform the Corrente from J.S. Bach’s Partitia No. 1 in B minor.

Patrick Milando, French hornist and frequent guest artist with the New York Philharmonic, will conclude the program with Mozart’s Concerto No. 4 for Horn in E-flat major.

7th Annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11

The seventh annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11 will be held Sunday, September 14, 5 pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Avenue, Nyack, NY. Sponsored by the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, the concert is given in memory of all of the victims and heroes of the attacks against our country on September 11, 2001. There is no charge for admission and the public is warmly invited.

The concert will open with the orchestra performing An Elizabethan Legend, by the late Alan Shulman (1915-2002), composer, student of Paul Hindemith, cellist and founding member of Arturo Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra and the Stuyvesant String Quartet. The Stuyvesant Quartet gave the American premiere of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet in 1941 at Carnegie Hall. The New York Philharmonic premiered both Mr. Shulman’s A Laurentian Overture in 1952 and his Cello concerto. Violinist Jascha Heifetz and jazz clarinetist Artie Shaw have performed and recorded Alan Shulman’s work. Mr. Shulman's son, cellist Jay Shulman, will be performing with the orchestra.

Kathleen Nester will then perform Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto in Do Maggiore for Piccolo, Strings and Cembalo. Ms. Nester is a member of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the Stamford Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, New York City Opera and on Broadway. She is currently a member of the woodwind faculty of NYU Steinhardt.

Anat Malkin-Almani, violin, and Robert Barrows, organ, will perform an arrangement by Jascha Heifetz of Tomaso Vitali's (1663-1745) Chaconne in G-minor for violin and continuo. Heifetz performed this piece for his New York debut at Carnegie Hall in 1917. Ms. Malkin-Almani made her Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 16. She has performed nationally and internationally as a violin and viola soloist and is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, Preparatory Division. She is an active chamber musician with her sister, Bracha Malkin, as The Malkin Duo. Mr. Barrows is the organist and choir director of Grace Episcopal Church. He is also the music director of Sarum, a group of 12 who sing plainchant with 13th century English pronunciation of Latin.

Barbara Allen, principal harpist of the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra and the Greenwich Symphony, and her daughter, Holly Druckman, flutist, will perform Serenade No. 10 for flute and harp, composed by Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987). Ms. Allen, a winner of the 7th Annual International Harp Competition in Israel, has appeared as soloist with the Caramoor and Waterloo festivals, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Greenwich Symphony and Hudson Valley Philharmonic and appeared with Tashi, Orpheus, St. Lukes’ Chamber Ensemble and the New World String Quartet. She has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic and American Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Allen holds degrees from SUNY Purchase and a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School.

Holly Druckman has performed with the Orangetown Community Band and is a student of Laura Gilbert at the Mannes Pre-College of Music. A student producer with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, she performs often with her mother, Barbara Allen, and will attend Columbia University this fall.

Larry Guy, clarinetist, and musicians from the orchestra will perform the second movement of W.A. Mozart's (1756-1791) Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, K. 581, Larghetto in D major. Composed in 1789 for clarinetist Anton Stadler, the work is known as the "Stadler Quintet." Mr. Guy is currently principal clarinet with the Long Island Philharmonic and Lake George Opera. For many years he was principal clarinetist with the Joffrey Ballet Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera Guild Orchestra and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, American Ballet Theatre, New Jersey Symphony, New York City Ballet and New York City Opera, Orchestra of St. Luke's and Emerson String Quartet among many others. Mr. Guy is currently Adjunct Artist and teaches at Vassar College. Performing with Mr. Guy will be Barbara Randall and Heather Haskew-Vogel, violins; Olivia Koppell, viola and Jay Shulman, cello.

Lenore Fishman Davis, pianist, will perform Johannes Brahms's (1833-1897) Intermezzo Op. 188, No. 2 for Piano and then will be joined by Alison Crowther, mother of Welles and violinist, to perform Melodie by C.W. Gluck (1714-1787) arranged by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962). This piece is also known as Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice. Ms. Davis has appeared throughout the U.S. and Europe as a soloist with major symphony orchestras and as a chamber musician. Her performances have been broadcast over Swiss and German radio and television, WQXR, WNYC and PBS. She founded the Arbor Chamber Music Society in 1991, which has performed widely throughout New Jersey, and toured Israel as a member of the Zichron Trio. Alison Crowther is a member of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, the North Jersey Symphony and the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra.

Jerry Grossman, principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 1986 will perform Antonin Dvorak’s ( 1841-1904) Waldesruhe and conclude the program with Dvorak’s Rondo in G-minor, Opus 94 for cello and orchestra. He was a founding member of the Chicago String Quartet and has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon. Currently, Mr. Grossman is a member of the chamber music faculty of The Juilliard School and the Kneisel Summer Chamber Music School in Blue Hill, Maine.

8th Annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11

Edward Simons, music director and conductor, is conductor of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra. Heather Vogel, violinist with the Albany Symphony and Rockland Symphony, will be concertmistress.

The concert will open with the orchestra performing Drei Stücke for string orchestra by Henry Purcell (1658-1695). Marti Sweet, violinist will then perform the andante movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) Concerto for Violin in A-minor.

Barbara Allen, principal harpist of the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra and the Greenwich Symphony, and Jerry Grossman, principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra will perform Camille Saint-Saens’ (1835-1921) Le Cygne (The Swan).

Flutists Jacquelyn Drechsler, Rockland Symphony, Holly Druckman, Columbia University, and Kathleen Nester, of New Jersey Symphony and Stamford Symphony, will join together to perform flute trios. Pianists Fredrica Wyman and Christopher Oldfather will perform a piano duet, Franz Schubert’s (1797-1828) Lebensstürme.

Alison Crowther, violinist, Rockland Symphony, will perform the allegro movement from J.S. Bach’s Sonata No.2 in A-minor. Ron Wasserman, principal double bassist of New York City Ballet Orchestra, will present Quatrefoil, his original composition for flute, viola, harp, and double bass. Wendy Stern, flutist, New Jersey Symphony, Désirée Elsévier, violist, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and Barbara Allen, harpist, will join Ron in the performance.

The concert will conclude with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756-1791) Exsultate, Jubilate, KV 165, featuring soloist Jennifer Cece Bellon, soprano.

Edward Simons, music director and conductor, is conductor of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra.   Heather Vogel, violinist with the Albany Symphony, Hudson Valley Philharmonic and Rockland Symphony, will be concertmistress.

Barbara Allen, principal harpist of American Ballet Theatre, will perform Debussy's Clair de Lune, followed by the orchestra performing J.S. Bach's Suite No. 1.

Stephen Reid, cello, and Jan Deats, piano, will perform Schumann's Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, and then Marti Sweet and Annamae Goldstein of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra will perform a piece for two violins.

Alison Crowther, Jay Shulman and Jan Deats will perform the first movement of Mendelssohn's Trio in D-minor. Jennifer Cece Bellon, soprano, will sing Amazing Grace, a piece traditionally sung or played at firefighter memorial services.

The concert finale will be a performance of Richard Strauss' Horn Concerto, Opus 11, No.1, with Patrick Milando, soloist.

10th Annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11

Lament and Restoration, composed for Alison Crowther by Ron Wasserman, principal double bassist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra, will open the concert.  Alison Crowther, as violinist, premiered the concerto in Italy on May 30, 2004, and gave its US premier at Concert for Remembrance on September 12, 2004.  Holly Druckman, Columbia University and international conducting student, will conduct the concerto.  Jan Deats, internationally renowned pianist, soloist and teacher on the faculty of Elizabeth Morrow School and Manhattan School of Music, Pre-college division, will perform as the featured harpsichordist.

Barbara Allen, principal harpist for American Ballet Theatre, will perform Marcel Grandjany’s Aria in Classic Style.  Marti Sweet, violinist, founder and artistic director of Musica Amici, will perform Meditation by Alexander Glazunov.

Edward Simons, Music Director, maestro of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra and founder of the Rockland Conservatory of Music, will conduct the Concert for Remembrance Orchestra in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, K 364.  Annamae Goldstein, violin, and Désirée Elsévier, violist, both of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, will perform as soloists.

Grace Church Choir, Robert Barrows conducting, will join the orchestra to perform In Paradisum from Faure’s Requiem as the final piece of the concert.
