Dear Friends,

We are sending out our newsletter early this year. The approaching 10th Anniversary of September 11th brings with it commemorations and commitments beyond the usual and we want to be sure to reach all of you with our news for this year.

Again, because of the ongoing generosity and support of so many of you in this challenging economic time, we were able to continue all of our charitable work as we have done in the past. This year’s Birchwood Awards were presented in June to two most deserving Nyack HS seniors, Kate Delaney and Mark Castellano. The Red Bandanna Scholarship at Rockland Conservatory of Music, presented last October, funded a young violinist’s schooling for the year. Once again the trust sponsored a Teacher Recognition Award created by the Tribute WTC Visitors Center at Ground Zero for teachers from around the world who have made a significant contribution in teaching 9/11 history. The 6th Annual Welles Remy Crowther Service Award at Boston College was presented in May by Paige Crowther to BC Senior Alanna O’Grady along with a donation to her charity of choice, “Bike and Build” for Habitat for Humanity.

We completed our major gift to the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks (The Wild Center) and made our annual significant gifts to Bonnie Brae, NJ; Cristo Rey NY High School, Harlem, NY; Institute for Educational Achievement, NJ; Children of Bellevue, NYC; C.O.R.S.E. therapeutic riding, Scituate, MA; Just One Soccer League, NJ; Nyack Library; Rockland YMCA and many other fine programs

Joshua Colas, age 10, the boy from White Plains, NY we helped sponsor for an important international tournament, achieved his goal to be the youngest African American to become a Chess Grand Master. We continue our support for Raleigh (NC) Youth Hockey Association’s “Capital City Crew”. Our international giving includes the Smile Train and Fundhamer Cebes Scholarship Fund. Plus, many more!! Please visit our website to learn about more of the good work we are doing through the trust.

We have had wonderfully successful fund-raisers this past year and this year, and because of the vision and commitment of our Board of Advisors, we are adding another fine event in which we hope many of you will participate in some way.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11th and celebrate Welles’ life, the Inaugural Welles Remy Crowther Red Bandanna Classic will be held on Friday, September 30 at Patriot Hills Golf Club, Stony Point, New York. Golfers of all abilities and non-golfers are invited!

Golfers will enjoy a continental breakfast, box lunch and barbeque dinner after a glorious day of golf on the beautiful, scenic Patriot Hills course. Fun contests and Hole-in-One prizes will include a $25,000 50/50, a trip for 2 to play 4 rounds of golf per person at British Open courses in Scotland, with 8 days/7 nights accommodations and round trip air fare included, and a two-year lease on a Ford vehicle, donated by Schultz Ford of Nanuet, NY.

Non-golfers are invited to join us for the barbeque and enjoy the splendid mountain views from the Patriot Hills Country Club patio with live and silent auctions filled with wonderful prizes.

Lee Ielpi, FDNY Ret., President of Families of September 11th and the Tribute 9/11 WTC Visitors’ Center will be our Guest of Honor. 10 Drummers from the Bonnie Brae Drum Corps will perform during the cocktail hour prior to the barbeque on the patio. The Drum Corps, composed of Bonnie Brae students, was invited to perform in President Obama’s Inaugural parade in January, 2009, in Washington, DC.

To register online, please visit www.golfdigestplanner.com/17887-Redbandannaclassic. More details about the event, places to stay, activities available for non-golfers, please visit www.crowthertrust.org/golf.html.

On May 5, President Obama visited Ground Zero after Osama bin Laden was killed. He met privately with a few 9/11 family members at the 9/11 Museum and Memorial Preview site on Vesey Street. Because of Welles, Jeff and I were most privileged to be invited to this very special meeting with President Obama. He was very approachable, genuinely caring and knew about the “Man in the Red Bandanna”. The 9/11 Museum created a special exhibit about Welles, which will be part of their permanent collection. President Obama took extra time to stop by the exhibit to have a photo taken with us there.

The Red Bandanna 5K Run at Boston College, sponsored by BC’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center, Dan Ponsetto, Director and, Kate Daly, Assistant Director, and our team of Jessica Alberti, Michael Barch, Paige Crowther, Marielle Sack Bush, Kate and Chris Ferrarone, James Gilroy, George Leuchs, Jody Steinglass, and support from many of Welles’ friends from Nyack and BC, continues to be one of our largest fund-raisers. Over 300 runners participated last year.

The Crowther Cup at Redtail in Canada, hosted by Jon Drake and organized by George Leuchs, has continued as a fund-raiser for many years, generously matched by the Drake family. Our 5th Annual “Raise a Cup” was held at The Nyack Field Club this past March, led by Michael Barch. Nyack High School Men’s Lacrosse Alums, Eamon DePeter, chief organizer, and Nyack High School Ice Hockey Alums, led by John Scott, Chris and Nicole Varmon and their families, faithfully hold fund-raisers for the trust, as well.

This year, the 4th Annual Red Bandanna Service Award was presented at the Bonnie Brae Polo Classic to the Osborne Family. Judge Harry Osborne founded Bonnie Brae in 1916. The Osborn Family, now headed by Ted Osborne, continues their unfailing support into the 4th generation with Ted, his wife, Robin, and their children. The grant is given to Bonnie Brae, a residential treatment center for at-risk adolescent boys that the trust has supported since the trust was established.

Other Upcoming Events

The 10th Annual Concert for Remembrance, 9/11 will be held on Sunday, September 18, 5 pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Avenue, Nyack, NY. As always, the free admission concert will be a beautiful gift to the community from the many fine professional musicians who volunteer their time for the concert. Please visit crowthertrust.org/concert_remembrance.htm for details.

The 7th Annual Welles Remy Crowther BC’99 Red Bandanna 5k Run will be held Saturday, October 15, at Boston College; race start time is 9:00 am. Day-of Registration will open at 7:30 am. Come join us! We cannot thank you all enough for your continued support! Please explore our website for more information on the good works we are doing with the dollars you contribute every year. Along with our donations goes Welles’ story, which is inspiring hearts of all ages, whenever it is heard. Thank you for keeping Welles’ spirit alive and working in others. Please help us to continue these good works. A donation of any amount will be so important and very much appreciated. Together we will bring much Good into this troubled world.

To learn about the spiritual journey some 9/11 families have experienced, please read Messages by Bonnie McEneaney, a 9/11 widow, published by Harper Collins. Watch A&E, ESPN, USAToday, Journal News, lohud.com, Guidepost.com for stories about Welles. Stern Magazine (Germany) and Testimony Films (England) are producing stories as well.

With faith, hope and love,

Alison and Jeff
